Formation

Initiation is the structured threshold experience through which a person passes from one level of formation to another — a deliberate encounter with difficulty, death of a previous identity, and emergence into expanded capacity and responsibility.

An initiation is not just a hard experience. It's a hard experience that changes what you are on the other side. Most cultures understood that certain thresholds — adolescence, marriage, leadership, war, the death of a parent — required deliberate ceremony and structure to be properly crossed. Without that structure, people go through the difficulty but don't receive the formation. They survive the threshold but don't cross it. Modern culture has largely removed initiation — and produced a generation of adults who haven't been through the door.

Evolution Used in Latin for entry into religious mysteries (initiation into the rites). The initiated person (initiatus) was one who had gone through a threshold experience that made them capable of receiving what those outside could not receive.

Initiation rites were central to virtually every traditional culture — Greek mystery religions (Eleusinian Mysteries), indigenous rites of passage, medieval guild entry, military ordination. All followed a similar structure: separation from the previous identity, liminal experience (threshold, ordeal, dissolution), and reincorporation at a new level. The initiated person was recognized as fundamentally different from the uninitiated — not superior, but formed at a different level.

Largely reduced to hazing, fraternity rituals, and corporate onboarding — the external form without the formative content. The psychological and anthropological literature (Turner, van Gennep, Campbell) preserves the genuine concept. In popular culture, associated with secret societies or religious conversion.

Modern culture has eliminated most genuine initiation while retaining the word for trivial transitions. 'I was initiated into the team' means you completed HR onboarding. The cost of this is enormous: people encounter major thresholds — failure, loss, confrontation with mortality — with no framework for receiving what those thresholds offer. They survive the experience and remain unchanged by it.

Creates the conditions for irreversible development — the threshold experience that, properly received, expands capacity in ways that normal experience cannot.
Role in formation
Initiation is the punctuation of the formation cycle — the threshold moments that mark the end of one level of development and the beginning of the next. Formation without initiation can be deep but not irreversible.
What breaks without it
Without initiation, development remains reversible — the person can return to previous patterns when conditions become difficult. Initiation forecloses certain reversions by fundamentally changing what the person is capable of and what they can no longer pretend not to know.
Integration Initiation is the threshold event of the Integration phase — the moment when accumulated experience crystallizes into irreversible development. It marks the passage from one cycle of formation to the next at a higher level.
Natural
Metamorphosis — the complete dissolution and reformation of the organism. The caterpillar does not gradually become a butterfly; it dissolves almost entirely and reforms. The process is irreversible. The butterfly cannot return to being a caterpillar.
Systems
In materials science: phase transition. Water doesn't gradually become steam — at a specific threshold of energy input, the phase changes completely and irreversibly (under given conditions). Initiation is the human phase transition.
  • Major difficulties are received as initiatory — the person asks 'what is this forming in me?' rather than 'when will this end?'
  • The person can identify clear thresholds in their own history where they became someone they could not have been before
  • Responsibility is accepted that matches the level of formation — the initiated person does not avoid the accountability that comes with having crossed the threshold
  • The person can be a guide for others approaching the thresholds they have already crossed
  • Initiation refused — the threshold encountered but not crossed; the difficulty survived but not received
  • Initiation imposed on others prematurely — using difficulty as punishment rather than formation
  • Initiation performed — claiming to have crossed a threshold without doing the actual formation work
